Pod #13 — Nurture Lessons of an Undefeated Title Team

Welcome back to the 13th episode of the Fantasy Sports Collective, the FS Collective podcast, hosted by JayDubb. This is part 1 of a 2 part series detailing the lessons learned being part of a perfect team. The first part is this show with our former coach, a father of a close friend, a mentor and educator of many, Richard Weaver. Note this was recorded during the holidays, months before COVID-19 griped us all.

Life flies by, we find a career path, get married, have kids and before long we’re knee deep into responsibility. We don’t often take enough time to reflect on the path traveled, appreciate those people who helped shape us into who we are today. Our parents have a special, obvious place in our journey. But it’s the teachers who often are overlooked. I was fortunate to grow up in an incredible place and time, Palo Alto in the early 1990’s. I played on a basketball team that was an undefeated state champion and the man who shaped the chemistry long before our championship ride. Richard Weaver was the definition of consistency, wisdom and quiet confidence. I was fortunate to have an opportunity to sit down with Mr. Weaver, to hear his reflections, 25 years later on what that experience meant to him, some of the back stories and ultimately to thank him for being himself.

Gordon Thompson and countless others contributed to the core having a decade of hoops chemistry classes under its belt. What I remember, what I took from the experience was the character that shaped all of us.

The coaches drilled an enjoyment of practice, the grind, loyalty and thankfulness at being part of this team. I don’t think my feelings for this team would be any different if we’d been 20–9 (vs. 31–0). I know I am a better person not for winning but learning dedication, teamwork, camaraderie, and the importance of having fun together. These are guiding principles for life. Thank you 🙏, I am a better, happier person for knowing each of you.
