Pod #19 — Is Tom Brady A Fantasy Savior & Super Bowl Contender in Tampa?

Welcome to the 19th episode of the Fantasy Sports Collective Podcast hosted by JayDubb. Joined by guest, Los Beans, aka Tadlock, this is a look at the NFL’s biggest free agent and/or player movement shifts of this 2020 offseason. Will Tom Brady be a QB1 and elevate the Bucs to true super bowl contenders, how does David Johnson, Todd Gurley and Melvin Gordon’s new homes impact their respective fantasy values? Hear those takes and more.
We discuss the biggest skill position moves this offseason across the NFL. Don’t expect to hear/learn about sleepers or surprises, this is just addressing the biggest names and likely impact performers at QB, RB, WR & TE for 2020.
NOTE: This Podcast was recorded prior to the New England Patriots signing former NFL MVP Cam Newton to a performance based 1 year contract. Below is included a general take on the move but it does NOT appear on the podcast.
QB’s
Tom Brady to Tampa Bay — Wow…42 going on 43….Brady is a top 10 fantasy QB under Arians w/ Godwin, Evans, Gronk, Howard, Brate. This is the greatest receiving talent Brady has ever had. The only hole is the slot security blanket. Godwin may slide in, Gronk is the oversized option but he’s not Edelman or Amendola.
Cam Newton to New England — The ceiling & floor on this move is wide. If Newton is healthy AND Josh McDaniels & company utilize his strengths well, he could be a surprise QB1. I have my doubts though that injuries have tapped his “super” man athletic abilities AND that the weapons surrounding him in New England are too mediocre to elevate his production. So in a superflex format he’s a good high variance pick but don’t count on top 5 production.
Teddy Bridgewater to Carolina — What impact does he have on the Panthers?
Phillip Rivers to Indy — Rivers is a big name and he’s a gunslinger but is this a better fit? Jacoby Brisset looked good at times but he got beat up. Thoughts?
Nick Foles traded to Chicago for a 4th round pick — The assumption is Foles starts over Trubisky, right? How is the fit?
What about Jameis Winton’s value — On a prove it, competition type of deal to learn behind Drew Brees, things could be worse. But only in super flex, dynasty leagues will he have value. B/c if Brees gets hurt, Winston will split time.
Marcus Mariota to Oakland as the backup to Derrick Carr — Is this Ryan Tannehill 2.0? It would be fitting given that’s what happened to Mariota last year in Tennessee. Thoughts?
RB’s
David Johnson to the Texans — Is DJ have a shot in Houston? Johnson lands in a good situation in Houston. He has Hyde and Duke Johnson to contend with but DJ is a versatile runner & receiver who will be a safety valve for DeShaun Watson. I could see 80+ receptions and 200 carries for a 1400 yard season.
Todd Gurley to the Falcons — This offseason saw the quick decline of in their prime former fantasy back studs. I like Gurley’s landing spot the best but injury concerns are greatest with him. If he’s 85% of his former self, the Falcons offense is sneaky productive. Gurley has a range of outcomes that includes another top 3 season but he could also be ineffective for the rest of his career.
Melvin Gordon to the Broncos — There’s a lot of mouths to feed. Phillip Lindsey, Royce Freeman. Gordon is the hardest to understand. Denver has a sound running game but a mediocre offense.
WR’s
DHop to Arizona — Does Larry Fitzgerald return? Where does DHop stand at WR swapping Watson 4 Murray? DHop is a special talent but switching teams and probably passing game efficiency means he’s not good value in the top 5, and could easily end up closer to WR15 in year one.
Brandon Cooks to Houston — Houston traded DHop for Cooks & David Johnson, how does that make football sense?
Stefon Diggs to Buffalo — I like this trade for the Vikings. Diggs was disgruntled and while some say he had a good valued contract, did Buffalo really need this at that level of cost (a 1st rounder)? Fantasy wise this a terrible landing spot, right?
Emanuel Sanders to New Orleans — Likely limited upside but you can’t ever count out a Saints receiver from fantasy relevance, right?
WR Robby Anderson to Carolina — He’s at best the #3 in a run-first offense behind DJ Moore & Curtis Samuel. Thoughts?
TE’s
Gronk is back with Brady — Gronk will be a top 5 TE every week he suits up. He’s still in his prime (30 years old) and a mismatch on every target. He’s good for .5 TD’s & 60 yards which makes him a high floor, solid ceiling TE next year. OJ Howard will be an in-line blocker, a strength, and an outlet valve. It’s possible he surprises but there are too many mouths to feed. Evans & Godwin maintain their value.
Eric Ebron to Pittsburgh — Ebron may have fantasy value but not as a game changer.
Austin Hooper to Cleveland — $11M a year for 4 years is a big investment. They’ve got David Njoke and lots of mouths to feed. Where does Hooper fit in the 2020 TE rankings?
Who is the player and/or situation you think will have the biggest fantasy impact?
Todd Gurley. If he’s healthy, he’s back home and in an offense that is close to as good. With Matt Ryan & excellent big receivers, the field will be spread giving Gurley open holes.
Who will be the biggest bust?
Melvin Gordon in Denver. Too many mouths. I feel bad for Gordon but this is not a good fit. A close 2nd is Derek Carr, though not sure it’s a bust when expectations are low.
I hope you enjoy!
